According to Reedsy, there are 10+ popular sub-genres of romance novels. These are just the biggies: as readers, we know authors can create any sub-genre they want (thank goodness! there’s a lot of wonderfully unique books out there).
One of my favorite lesser-known sub-genres, the one I write in — and a growing favorite among other authors, it seems — is what I call “nature-centered romance.”
What exactly is that, you ask? It’s a romance novel where nature isn’t just a place but honestly one of the MCs (main characters). The lake where two people finally fall in love, the hiking trail where the misunderstanding ruins everything, the small town that’s more like a BFF than a setting.
If you’ve ever finished a romance novel and missed the outdoor place and all its adventures as much as the characters, then you’re probably a nature-centered romance fan!
